About Etchings

Etching, the intaglio process, uses a plate, usually zinc or copper, and the image is etched into the plate with the help of acid. One can also scratch into the plate; this is called engraving. The print is produced by first inking the plate with a very thick ink and wiping off the excess ink. The ink under the surface of the plate is left, and paper is placed over the plate and run through a press which applies tremendous pressure. This pushes the paper down into the etched/engraved areas and pulls out the ink. The printed image appears in the opposite direction from the image on the plate.
