 | Monotypes
A monotype is a composition generally painted on a Plexiglas plate. Any paint that lifts off the plate, (i.e. oil, acrylic, watercolor) may be used. The plate is printed just like an etching. The reason for doing a “painting” in this manner is the pressure on the plate from the press “squishes” the paint in such a way that it looks unlike any other technique. It is also ethical to rework a monotype in any other media after the print is printed. Sometimes a second print, known as a monotype ghost, is printed. The printed image appears considerably lighter than the first print and is generally reworked in such a way that it is difficult to see any relationship in the fist and second print.
